1. 1999 Detroit Automotive Technology Conference & Exposition

On March 6, the Detroit Chinese Engineers Association (DCEA)
held its 1999 Detroit Automotive Technology Conference and Exposition
at the Lawrence Technological University. Due to the sudden
snow storm, road condition was extremely difficult for driving.
However, there are still more then sixty people attended the conference.

The "Leadership in the Next Millennium" is the theme of our conference
this year, as both a continuation and an extension of our previous
years' conference themes: "Global Technology and Business
Development" in 1997 and "Advancing Technology for the Future" in 1998.

This conference was featured by four technical sessions in the
morning and a plenary session in the afternoon. In the morning
sessions, many specialists presented their in-depth research and
development in four important technical areas: Information and
Knowledge Engineering (chaired by Dr. Nancy Wang),
Powertrain Engineering (chaired by Dr. Rong Chen), CAD/CAE/CAM (chaired
by Dr. Ren-Jie Yang), and Environment, Health, and Safety (chaired
by Dr. Tai Chan).

Three distinguished researchers delivered theirs speeches during the
plenary session (chaired by Dr. Tai Chan) to share their insight
and perspectives about the advancement of technology and the automotive
industry as we enter the next century. They are: Mr. Claude Verbal,
former SAE president, and presently Chief Operating Officer at
Wesley Industries, Inc., Dr. David Chang, Director of Vehicle Systems
Analysis and Simulation Center at General Motors, and Dr. Darsh Kumar,
Senior Staff Scientist, General Motors Research and Development Center.
Dr. Jean Botti from Delphi Automotive Systems served as the
moderator for the session.

An important event of this conference is the kick-off meeting of DCEA
Advisory Council (organized by Dr. Yilong Chen) which consists of all
the past DCEA presidents. They have made great contributions to
DCEA in the past as well as achieved great successes in their professional
career. And now they are back again to help DCEA with their knowledge
and experience in organizing voluntary activities. Attendees at the
meeting include Dr. Litton Lee, the first president of DCEA in 1982.

Organizers of this conference include Dr. Jie Cheng (Chairman), Dr.
Nancy Wang (co-Chairman), Dr. Tai Chan, Dr. Rong Chen, Dr. James Cheng,
Dr. Simon Tung, Dr. Ren-Jie Yang, Dr. Kingman Yee, Dr. Chin
Kuo, Dr. Yilong Chen, Dr. Zach Fu , Dr. Ron Liu, and Mr. Patrick Cheung.

The conference won support from many companies. The sponsors include
Ford, GM, CGN and Associates, Altair Engineering, and Giddings and
Lewis. Four other companies, EASi Engineering, Optimal CAE, Inc.,
Engineering Technology Associates, and Silicon Graphics, Inc.
joined the conference as corporate exhibitors.
