Survey Sample Management System using Mobile Computing
Qian Yang
Manager, Software System Development
Survey Research Center
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Abstract
In survey research business, hundreds of interviewers need an easy way
to get up-to-date sample assignments and track each interviewing case.
Also, a large size of survey data needs to transfer back forth between
the central office and each remote user. By using Power-Designor,
PowerBuilder 5.0, Sybase SQL Anywhere and the Internet, Survey Research
Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan is rewriting its Survey
Sample Management System. PowerBuilder allowed us to quickly develop a
sample management system and SQL Anywhere provided the ability to
seamlessly replicate time-sensitive data between the host and remote
users via the Internet. Presentation will review the system components
in a replication environment.

The Outlook of the Internet in 1998
Jieyun (Jessica) Yu
Senior Internet Architect
UUnet, WorldCom
ABSTRACT
The Internet has been growing in an amazing rate in the past several
years. What's the outlook in the year 1998 and beyond? This presentation
attempts to address the question in the aspects of the development of
technology, network infrastructure and applications. It will also discuss
the trends of the Internet development in the business aspect.
The Internet will continue to grow in a fast pace in 1998. Internet
Service Providers(ISPs) will be expanding and enhencing network infrastructure
to meet the ever increasing need of bandwidth. The end users will be able to
have faster access to the Internet with the development of technology such
as cable modem, xDSL or 56k modem. Other means of Internet access such as
wireless and satellite will become more and more available. Multi-media
applications over Internet will be taking off providing users the capability
of doing things such as video conferencing, Internet phone and video-on-
demand. E-commerce will be more widely used. As a result, the technologies
for utilizing the network bandwidth wisely will be further developed and
deployed. These including multicasting, web-caching and Pushing. Class-of-
Service model are likely to be adopted by service providers giving users
options for better service replacing best-effort service only model currently
deployed. On the non-technical side, the debate of how much involvement the
government should have in the Internet industry will continue, there will be
less and less free services online for consumers and the consolidation of phone
companies and ISPs will continue. Overall, this will be an exciting year for
the Internet and the Internet users.
About the Speaker:
Jessica Yu is a Senior Internet Architect at UUnet WorldCom. She was one of
the key players who built NSFNET which is widely considered as the pioneer
work on the Internet which led to the blooming of today's Internet. She has
many publications in the Internet field and is one of the architects
developed CIDR, an Internet standard which is widely deployed in today's
Internet. Jessica is currently Chairing the Routing Robustness Working Group
of IOPS, an organization composed of major ISPs internationally. She has
chaired and co-chaired IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Working Groups
developing Internet standards. She also served on the US Federal Engineering
Planning Group and International Network Planning Group.

Data Mining and Business Applications
Jie Cheng
Senior Technical Specialist
Business Modeling Research
Ford Research Laboratories
ABSTRACT
With the advances in storage, DBMS, and internet technologies, the amount of
information collected by businesses is doubling every five years.
However, many organizations are having a hard time finding ways
to use all that data to improve their bottom line. When data volume
grows too big, few companies have the capacity to make sense of it all.
In business endeavors, data captures information about markets,
competitors, and customers. In manufacturing, data captures performance
and optimization opportunities. In order to retrieve valuable information
from the depths of their corporate databases, more and more companies are
starting to adopt data mining methods and tools.
Data mining is an integration of a diverse set of technologies, including Data
Warehousing, advanced statistics, high-dimensional data visualization, and
artificial intelligence. Data mining also refers to a class of sophisticated
algorithmic approaches used to extract relevant relationships in the data:
association, sequence-based analysis, clustering, classification, and
estimation.
This talk will provide a brief review of the field and then present a
novel data mining methodology based on genectic algorithms.
About the Speaker:
Jie Cheng is a Senior Technical Specialist working in the Ford Research
Laboratories. He received his Master and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from
the
University of Michigan with special interest in Artificial Intelligence.
Since joining Ford, He has been conducting research and dvelopment of
intelligent information systems and methodologies, including data mining
using decision trees, neural networks, and genetic algorithms,
for engineering as well as business applications such as engine
design/simulation,
in-line vehicle sequencing, and most recently, vehicle residual value analysis
and vehicle remarketing study.
