1. President's Message from Chin Kuo

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear DCEA Members and Friends:

We had a very successful technical conference held in February 1998. The

attendance was excellent. The program coverage and quality of

presentations were highly praised. The conference was fully supported by

Big Three and automotive suppliers. There were plenty of opportunity for

networking among the fellow engineers and scientists from industry,

academic institutions, and exhibitors. The success was primarily

attributed to the enthusiatic support from everyone of you. I would like

to again take this opportunity to thank you in addition to the

recognitions that were given at the conference luncheon and printed in

the conference program.

It is the Board of Directors' plan to continue the DCEA's tradition in

providing quality service to our members and engineering profession

and the society in general. Future effort will focus on the following

activities.

1. Update the Membership Directory.

2. Prepare promotional information packets for recruiting new mwembers.

3. Try to communicate through email as much as possible. Please provide

your email address to Rong Chen (rchen01@detroitdiesel.com) or Eric Che

(chche@rmastat.ma.gmr.com). We would like to include email address in

the Membership Directory

4. Plan to send out English version of the newsletter via email and

Chinese version via regular mail on a regular basis. This is a very cost

effective way of enhancing our communication.

5. Continue to update our web page: http://www.wwnet.net/~dcea.

6. Sponsor up to two scholarships to high school Chinese students who

will enter engineering school this Fall.

7. Sponsor a half day technical workshop/seminar on current topics in

the Fall.

8. Participate in Soup Kitchen which is a collective effort of Chinese

community in Greater Detroit area.

9. Begin to plan the next technical conference in February, 1999.

DCEA attempts to be active and provides service to you. I strongly urge

you to get involved by signing up these activities. Please let me know

your interest by sending me an email message (kuo@eng.wayne.edu).

Have a nice summer!

3. DCEA President Visited Chinese Universities

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As part of the effort to enhance Wayne State University's international

programs, DCEA President and Wayne State's Dean of Engineering Dr. Chin

Y. Kuo and Wayne State's President Dr. Irvin D. Reid have recently

completed a trip to China. The purposes of this two week trip were to

explore new opportunities for faculty and student exchanges, research

collaborations, further development of existing programs and joint

conferences and cultural programs. Six universities were visited: Fudan

University and Tongji University in Shanghai, Zhejiang University in

Hangzhou, and Tsinghua University, Peking University and Beijing

Institute of Technology in Beijing. Both of them visited many key

national laboratories and gave lectures on Education and Globalism.

The visits were considered extremely successful and productive. During

the trip, Wayne State University and Tongji University signed an

affiliation agreement. A similar agreement was sign between Wayne State

University and Fudan University this past February on Wayne State

campus. Currently, College of Engineering has various activities in

progress or in planning stages with these universities except Peking

University. Several faculty research collaborations are underway. A

significant number of Chinese graduate students and visiting scholars

from these universities are on campus. There are quite a few engineering

faculty members who are of Chinese origin and some of them have given or

will give lectures over there. The programs of interest include

Biomedical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Materials and Sensors,

Infrastructures Engineering and Engineering Management.
