PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dr. Chin Kuo (¹ùÇÕÒå)
Greetings! It is my pleasure and honor to
accept the position of President of DCEA
effective January, 1998. This organization
has been nurtured by members and officers
in the past and has grown into one of the
leading technical associations in this
metropolitan area. One of DCEA's major
goals is to advance technology through the
interaction of members as well as other
interested engineers and scientists. All nine
board members are committed to serve you
and the organization that we are very proud
of being a part of. I strongly encourage you
to renew your membership by returning the
membership form, and to be proactive in
recruiting new members. Equally important,
you are invited to participate in all activities
sponsored by DCEA. Please try to be active
and involved. The upcoming annual Spring
Meeting scheduled on February 28, 1998 at
Lawrence Technological University is a
major event planned to provide opportunity
for technical information exchange and
professional networking. This meeting is in
conjunction with the annual SAE conference
in Detroit and National Engineering Week.
Your participation in presenting papers or
discussing various important technical
subjects is a way of showing your interest in
and support of DCEA. There are other
activities currently being planned. For
example, DCEA board members have
approved that DCEA be a sponsor of the
Detroit Chinese Coalition for Outstanding
Association Member Award Banquet in the
Spring, and DCEA will increase the level of
communication and enhance its visibility via
electronic technology.
This year's officers have been lined up.
Please contact any of them for information,
assistance and suggestions. As I mentioned
earlier, we are here to serve you.

For many years, this annual conference has been providing a unique platform for Chinese
engineers, students, professors, and researchers working in the greater Detroit area whose
work or interest are related to the automotive industry. As the Big Three move towards
globalization and more Chinese professionals and scholars move into the area, the
conference has become popular, and has experienced important changes in scale, topic,
and attendence. The conference in 1995 had a theme of Advancing Technology and
Career; in 1996, Advancing Technology and Globalization; in 1997, Advancing
Technology and Business Development. For this year, the theme of Advancing
Technology for the Future has been chosen. Under this theme, new topic, such as
information technology, has been introduced.
This conference is unique in that most of the presenters are at the forefront of their
technical fields and have a broad as well as in-depth understanding of the technical
challenges and advanced methodologies. Rather than emphasizing on detailed and
narrow topics as many technical conferences do, this conference's emphasis is to provide
overviews of a diverse set of engineering disciplines and awareness of the latest
technologies.
This conference has attracted not only local professionals and students, but also many
industry leaders and scholars from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. They have shown
strong interest in participating in the conference and brought with them important and
interesting information and perspectives of automotive industry on both sides of the
Pacific. The uniqueness and the important role of the conference has been well
recognized. Ford, General Motors, and many other companies have provided financial
support to the conference, and many high-level managers or directors have come to
address the conference audience.

Due to the late election of DCEA board members, we were not been able to send out the call for papers
announcement for this conference to each member by newsletter. Instead, we managed to send it out to
various Chinese newspapers and email groups in metro Detroit area in the past few weeks. If you haven't
received the call for paper announcement and would like to make a presentation in any of the five technical
sessions, we welcome you to call or email the session chairs as soon as possible (phone numbers for the
chairs can be found on page 4). Currently we still have a few slots open in the morning sessions. For the
conference proceedings, only the abstract (not exceeding one page) will be included. Each speaker is
allowed 20 minutes of oral presentation (can be in Chinese or English or a combination of both languages)
followed by a five minute Q&A period. By the way, conference speakers' registration is complimentary.
Visit the official DCEA website! (Çë²Î¹ÛÖ餻áÍòÎÍøÒ³)
Since the conclusion of DCEA's first board meeting on January 10. 1998, our newsletter
editor Zach Fu & Eric Che went on to design a website for DCEA. It is now
partially complete. We'd
like to announce the development of this new site for the best offering of news and
information on DCEA! The internet address is: http://www.wwnet.com/~dcea
On this website, you can read our past issues of DCEA newsletters if you are a new
member; you will read greetings from our new president, Dr. Chin Kuo. We have also
created a "member resource" page which includes a rich collection of information on our
daily life and professional life; the "other links" page links you to websites of the Big
Three, major professional organizations, major research centers, and links to all public
and private engineering universities and colleges in Michigan. You now can send an
email to all the board members at a single click on the website. We are continuing our
construction of the "photo gallery" page, etc. If you have any new ideas on how to
improve the effectiveness of DCEA's service for members, please send us an email or
talk directly to the board members. Your valuable opinions and innovative ideas are
always welcomed.
We are looking for DCEA officers!
DCEA is a professional organization devoted to technical information exchange and
professional networking. We are continuously searching for volunteers to serve as
DCEA officers. If you'd like to get involved in DCEA's organizational activities, such as
public relations and fund raising, membership drive, website construction, newsletter
editorial, technical conference and workshop development, scientific & technological
exchange activities, etc., please contact our board members at:

DCEA Newsletters are published several times a year, covering DCEA activities, local news, job postings,
and Chinese automotive industry news. If you know of some fellow Chinese professionals who recently
received honors/awards from your company or from other organizations, please let us know and we would
like to include it in our newsletters in the form of a brief or a personal interview. If you know of some
recent developments in the automotive industry and you feel it will help inform or benefit fellow Chinese
engineers, don't hesitate to contact our editors. We also welcome inquires on advertisements in this
newsletter. Above all, this is your organization and we are here to serve you. Drop us a line when you have
some suggestions on what should be included in the newsletters so we can make it more informative and
