Detroit Chinese Engineers Association Newsletter

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dr. Simon C. Tung ( ¾² Óî) On behalf of the Detroit Chinese Engineers Association, I would like to thank you for your continuous support at our Automotive Technology Conference on March 1. We had a very successful conference and exposition which drew nearly 170 engineers, international leaders, and scientists from China, Asia, and the U.S., to participate in this significant event. This conference was one of the highlights in Detroit that did provide an outstanding forum for communication on current developments and future directions of automotive technology. We appreciate your participation. This year our DCEA board has two major goals for the activities we organize: (1) to provide our members with up-to-date technical insights and perspectives from automotive leaders on the development of modern automotive technology; (2) to further broaden our skills and career development especially in the areas of Global Technology and Business Networking. We have the following plans: (1) to organize a workshop on automotive components and body engineering in the middle of June. Dr. James Cheng will be the Workshop Chairman; (2) to interface with the SAE Pacific Steering Committee and STLE (Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers) International Committee for a joint seminar or conference on automotive manufacturing process and tribology in August or Fall; (3) to sponsor an intensive workshop in the area of computer aided design and virtual image processing; (4) to host a conference and panels with two Chinese Delegation Teams from China and Taiwan in the Fall or winter; (5) to organize our annual meeting and an election of a new board of directors in November or December.
DCEA is a non-profit professional association aimed at promoting information networking among Chinese engineers and scientists in the Greater Detroit area. In our new design of DCEA the Logo, we have a statement underneath our design “Together We Advance in Technology and Career”. This is our long-term goal and dream. Our activities or workshops are aimed at showcasing innovative contributions in automotive technology by Chinese engineers and providing a forum for more general discussion on technology or career opportunities. Invited speakers in our future conferences or workshops are industrial experts and business leaders from Asia and U.S.
This year our association is fortunate to have a very active and dedicated Board of Directors. I am confident that we can organize great conferences and workshops based on your needs and suggestions. We sincerely invite you to participate in our committees to enhance our activities and broaden your perspectives in globalization. Finally, I welcome the chance to discuss with any members, especially newer members and prospective members, your thoughts on the future of DCEA. The Board is always looking for new ideas, and we are interested in continuously refreshing the activities we plan to organize. I also would like to thank you again for your strong support at the last conference and hope you have a wonderful year in 1997.

Memorandum of Understanding signed by SAE International and SAE China

On February 25, 1997, a negotiation meeting between SAE International and SAE China was held in Westin Hotel President Suite. SAE 1997 President Mr. David Holloway, SAE 1996 President Mr. Claude Verbal, Executive Vice President Mr. Max Rumbaugh and SAE China President Mr. Xingye Zhang were in the meeting. They discussed about the Memorandum of Understanding between SAE International and SAE China. Both sides then consented and signed the document the following day.
As indicated, this year, SAE International's membership drive activity will focus on three countries: China, Russia, and India. In May 14- 20, 1997, Mr. John Casker, Manager of Section Relations Division, Mr. Murli Lycr, Global Operations Manager, will both go to China to meet with Mr. Xingye Zhang, President of SAE China. At that time, they will complete the document for an agreement based on the Memorandum of Understanding, and plan the future joint activities in China. As stated by the officials at the meeting, SAE International will introduce a great amount of new technologies into China, especially in the area of automobile, light truck, and special purpose vehicle engineering.

DCEA LOGO DESIGN CONTEST RESULTS

Since the logo contest was announced in the last newsletter, fifteen designs have been submitted by eight DCEA members. Ten of those designs were shown below. In its last meeting, the DCEA board voted for the best design. As the result, the winner was not one person, but three people. And the best design was determined to be a combination of three winning design entries: entry 5, 9, and 10. Among the three designs, entry 10 was the most interesting and creative. The final logo is presented on the next page with explanations. The DECA board has decided to award the designers of the three winning entries with $20.00 each. The board appreciates the effort of all who have participated this contest.
The designers for the following entries are:
Entry 1: Kingman Yee
Entry 2: Tsi-Shang Chou
Entry 3: Tsi-Shang Chou
Entry 4: Larry L. Ting
Entry 5: Elizabeth Tung
Entry 6: Yuqing Dai
Entry 7: C. M. Seto
Entry 8: Yuqing Dai
Entry 9: Kingman Yee
Entry 10: Jie Gu

DCEA LOGO FINAL DESIGN

The final design of the DCEA logo is a combination of three design entries. The design is presented below on this page. The design adopted entry 10 to be the basis and added some of the flavors from design entries (5) and (9). Of course, all other designs also had their impact on the final design. The final design was put together by the board after evaluating all submissions.
In this design, a subtle part is the message contained in the vehicle. It carried the words DCEA in the two car wheels. And it nicely engraved the words Ö餻á into the window and side panels. We'd like to challenge the reader to find them out. The vehicle was a GM design. But the elipse surrounding it was from the Ford logo. On the top, there are the names of DCEA as well as the lotto of DCEA.
